With the knee being made up of many ligaments, muscles, cartilage and bone, there are a great deal of reasons for the cause of knee pain. You may notice knee pain occasionally or all the time, it may be gradually getting worse, you may not know the exact cause of your knee pain, or you may have fallen over or injured the knee while playing sport.
The below diagram outlines some of the common causes of knee pain, varying from underlying conditions such as osteoarthritis to injuries such as a meniscus tear or anterior cruciate ligament rupture.
To find out the exact cause of knee pain, you will need to book an appointment with a specialist who will be able to examine the knee and perform any necessary tests which could include an X-Ray, CT scan or MRI scan. You can find out more about these tests here.
Once the cause of the knee pain is diagnosed, there are many ways to treat the pain such as stretches, pain relief, activity modification, surgery, or monitoring the knee pain over time.
